Conventional Non-Destructive Testing

Proven Techniques. Trusted Results.

Uncover Critical Flaws, Validate Integrity and Keep Assets Online

Not every inspection calls for robotics, automation, or AI. For many critical assets operating under extreme load, pressure, and fatigue, the first — and often most important — step toward reliability is trust in the fundamentals. TEAM’s Conventional Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) services provide accurate, repeatable insight into material condition without damaging components or interrupting operations.

Using proven techniques like radiography, ultrasonics, magnetic particle, dye penetrant, visual inspection, and positive material identification (PMI), TEAM’s certified technicians help operators quickly detect flaws, verify weld quality, and confirm material composition. Each method is procedure-driven and code-compliant, ensuring your inspection aligns with regulatory standards while delivering field-ready results.

Whether you’re inspecting during fabrication, performing QA/QC for critical components, or troubleshooting corrosion during a turnaround, these techniques form the backbone of nearly every asset integrity program. As part of the TEAM360 ecosystem, conventional NDT integrates seamlessly with advanced inspection technologies, repair services, and digital reporting via OneInsight® — providing a comprehensive, connected approach to lifecycle asset management.

Cover Every Angle

Here’s how our conventional NDT methods deliver accurate, non-invasive insights that verify material integrity, detect flaws early, and support safer, smarter decisions.

Radiographic Testing (RT)

Expose internal flaws without disassembly

Radiographic Testing (RT) is a non-destructive examination method that uses X-ray or gamma energy to detect internal flaws deep within welds, castings, and structural materials. The material is exposed to a focused radiation source, and the resulting energy either passes through or is absorbed by the object — creating a latent image on radiographic film or a digital detector.

That image is then chemically processed or digitally reviewed to reveal internal discontinuities such as porosity, slag inclusions, shrinkage cavities, or incomplete fusion. TEAM technicians follow strict internal procedures and reference industry standards (e.g., ASME, API) to validate the image quality and evaluate the results.

+
Ultrasonic Testing (UT)

Measure thickness and detect flaws with sound

Ultrasonic Testing (UT) sends high-frequency sound waves into materials to locate internal flaws, measure thickness, and verify compliance with inspection standards. Reflected signals indicate cracks, corrosion, disbonds, or voids to product fast and accurate insight.

UT requires access to just one side and causes no damage, making it ideal for in-service inspections of welds, pressure boundaries, or corroded piping. TEAM’s experts apply both conventional pulse-echo and advanced UT methods to deliver dependable results—wherever and whenever needed.

+
Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI)

Reveal surface cracks in seconds

Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) reveals surface and near-surface flaws in ferromagnetic materials by magnetizing the part and applying iron particles. Discontinuities disrupt the magnetic field, creating flux leakage that draws the particles into visible indications.

This method is quick, visual, and highly effective for detecting fatigue cracks, weld flaws, and forging defects in steel, iron, and nickel-based alloys. TEAM’s inspectors evaluate indications in real time, supporting fast decisions in high-risk environments.

+
Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT)

Highlight surface-breaking flaws with contrast

Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) is a widely used method for detecting surface-breaking discontinuities in both magnetic and nonmagnetic materials. The process involves applying a visible or fluorescent dye penetrant to a clean, dry surface. The dye is drawn into open flaws by capillary action.

After an appropriate dwell time, excess dye is removed, and a developer is applied to draw the trapped penetrant back out—producing a clear visual indication of cracks, laps, porosity, or leaks. TEAM follows established procedures and uses industry-standard dyes to ensure accurate, repeatable results.

+
Positive Material Identification (PMI)

Confirming alloy types to eliminate risk

Positive Material Identification (PMI) uses X-ray fluorescence (XRF) or Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES) to verify alloy composition on-site, without damaging the part. TEAM’s portable analyzers confirm over 100 engineering alloys in real time — without lab testing or cutting.

PMI ensures weld and base metal accuracy, supports QA/QC programs, and meets Process Safety Management (PSM) standards. It’s especially useful for piping, flanges, valves, and structural materials where the wrong alloy can mean critical failure.

+
Visual Testing (VT)

Detect damages and defects in critical equipment

Visual Inspection, or Visual Testing (VT), is the process of looking over a piece of equipment using the naked eye of a trained technician to look for flaws. It can be used for internal and external surface inspection of a variety of equipment types, including storage tanks, pressure vessels, piping, and other equipment.

Visual inspection is simple and less technologically advanced compared to other methods. Despite this, it still has several advantages over more high-tech methods. It is cost effective and easy to perform. TEAM has API 510, API 570, API 653 and AWS Certified Welding inspectors on staff to meet your visual inspection needs.
